In a groundbreaking move, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted approval to Samsung’s Galaxy Watch for detecting sleep apnea. This achievement positions Samsung as a pioneer in smartwatch-based sleep monitoring, surpassing competitors like Apple.

The First of Its Kind

The Galaxy Watch is now officially recognized as the first smartwatch to receive FDA approval specifically for sleep apnea detection. This milestone underscores Samsung’s commitment to health and well-being through wearable technology.

How Does It Work?

  • The sleep apnea monitoring feature will be available in the third quarter of 2024 for compatible Galaxy Watches.
  • Users over the age of 22 can benefit from this functionality.
  • To detect signs of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), users must track their sleep for more than four hours within ten days.
  • The watch’s BioActive Sensor plays a crucial role in monitoring blood oxygen levels during sleep.
  • It identifies potential warning signs by analyzing changes in these values throughout the night.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a common yet often under-diagnosed sleep disorder. Left untreated, it can lead to serious health complications, including:

  • Hypertension
  • Heart failure
  • Cardiac arrhythmia

Who Should Use It?

While the sleep apnea detection feature is intended for general use, it is not recommended for individuals who have already been diagnosed with sleep apnea. Instead, it serves as a valuable tool for early detection and prevention.

Availability and Compatibility

  • The Galaxy Watch’s sleep apnea feature is expected to roll out during Q3 2024.
  • Users can access it through the Samsung Health Monitor app.
  • Keep in mind that the effectiveness of sleep apnea detection may vary based on your carrier, device model, and paired phone.

A Holistic Approach to Health

Samsung continues to prioritize health-focused features for its users. From irregular heart rhythm notifications to sleep apnea detection, the Galaxy Watch series aims to enhance overall well-being. With FDA approval, Samsung solidifies its position as a leader in wearable health technology.

So, if you’re a Galaxy Watch user, get ready for a healthier night’s sleep with this groundbreaking feature.
