A massive gas explosion in Nairobi, Kenya, has resulted in at least three deaths and nearly 300 injuries. The incident occurred in the Embakasi district around 23:30 local time when a gas-carrying lorry exploded, creating a massive fireball, damaging homes, businesses, and vehicles.

Initially thought to be at a gas plant, the cause of the blast is still under investigation. Wesley Kimeto, the Embakasi police chief, reported that a child was among the casualties, and the death toll may increase. The Kenya Red Cross transported 271 individuals to hospitals, treating 27 on-site. Unconfirmed reports allege that two mechanics started the Embakasi fire after starting a car they were fixing, residents had already started warning of gas in the air at 10pm

Isaac Mwaura, the government spokesman, revealed that the fireball spread widely, hitting a garments and textiles warehouse with a flying gas cylinder. This resulted in the destruction of various vehicles, commercial properties, and residential houses in the neighborhood.

Witnesses reported feeling tremors after the explosion, with many of the injured suffering from inhalation injuries, including at least 25 children. Boniface Sifuna, an injured individual, recounted his experience, saying, “I got burnt by an exploding gas canister as I was trying to escape.” He described the impact knocking him down, but fortunately, he managed to escape.

Residents, including James Ngoge, living near the blast site, described the incident as feeling like an earthquake, causing widespread destruction. The Kenya Red Cross confirmed their crews were actively battling the flames, while the government set up a command center to coordinate rescue operations.

Government spokesman Mr. Isaac Mwaura urged people to stay away from the affected area to minimize disruptions to ongoing rescue efforts. The incident has led to widespread damage and displacement, with many residents forced to evacuate their homes.
