Glovo, a leading technological platform, today announced a landmark partnership with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to launch an innovative rider safety program centered around its new Road Safety feature. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in promoting road safety and responsible riding practices across Kenya’s delivery sector.

The launch event also brought together a broad coalition of institutional stakeholders, including representatives from the Boda Boda Safety Association of Kenya, Nairobi County, and the Nairobi Police Forces, underscoring the collective resolve to improve road safety standards for Kenya’s rider community.

“This new feature represents our commitment to rider safety through innovation, by offering riders visibility into their riding patterns and a personalized safety score, we are empowering them to make informed decisions that keep them safer on the road.”  said Caroline Mutuku, General Manager for Glovo Kenya.

At the heart of this initiative is Glovo’s new Safety feature, a voluntary opt-in tool within the app that leverages advanced technology to promote safer riding habits. This feature provides riders with real-time insights into their riding behavior, including analysis of speed patterns, acceleration, and braking techniques.

The new technology helps riders identify root causes of potential accidents, offering actionable insights that help them develop responsible driving practices while maintaining their autonomy and earning potential while using Glovo.

On their part, Mr Samuel Musumba, Manager Road Safety Programs & Data, stated: “Our partnership with Glovo demonstrates what can be achieved when the private sector and government agencies work together towards a common goal. Through this initiative, we are not just launching a feature, we are fostering a strong culture of safety that will benefit riders, their families, and all road users. Motorcycle riders are among the most vulnerable road users. In our areas, they  operate in a challenging environment with High traffic congestion, Mixed traffic (PSVs, private cars, trucks), high Pedestrian density, High-risk roundabouts etc. Safe, Professional riding is therefore critical in saving lives”.

As part of the partnership, NTSA conducted a dedicated two-hour road safety training session for riders that use Glovo. These sessions covered essential safety protocols, traffic regulations, and best practices for navigating Kenya’s roads safely and efficiently. The training also featured the Boda Management System (BMS) facilitated by Nairobi County Police, enabling riders to formally register into the system and strengthen their regulatory standing. Glovo’s collaboration with both Nairobi County and the Nairobi Police Forces reinforces the initiative’s commitment to embedding safety at every level of governance.

Riders who completed the training received official certificates from NTSA, adding valuable credentials to their professional portfolio and demonstrating their commitment to safety excellence.

Supporting Financial Security

Recognizing the importance of financial security, Glovo also facilitated capacity-building sessions on establishing SACCOs. These sessions, conducted in partnership with Pioneer Insurance, will equip riders with the knowledge and tools needed to create sustainable financial support systems for themselves.

The launch of this initiative comes at a critical time for road safety in Kenya. With riders increasingly present on Kenyan roads, Glovo recognizes the urgent need for proactive safety measures to protect the rider community and contribute to reducing road accidents. The Rider Safety feature is now available to all riders who use Glovo who wish to opt in.

Glovo is equally committed to protecting riders beyond the road. All riders operating through the platform in Kenya benefit from comprehensive safety coverage, including accident and medical insurance.
