The Kenya International Freight and Warehousing Association (KIFWA), together with its insurance partners, has launched a Digital Marine Cargo Insurance platform ahead of the mandatory Marine Cargo Insurance requirements set to take effect on July 1, 2026.

The platform, launched in Nairobi on June 30, 2026, is expected to make it easier for importers, clearing agents and freight forwarders to obtain Marine Cargo Insurance certificates digitally.

KIFWA said the new platform will provide a seamless, secure and compliant way of issuing insurance certificates through an integrated system connected to eCitizen, KRA’s ICMS, M-Pesa, banking institutions and other regulatory bodies.

The initiative has been developed in partnership with APA General Insurance, Britam General Insurance, CIC General Insurance, Old Mutual General Insurance, Pacis Insurance, Dynamique and eCitizen.

Through the platform, users will be able to receive digital Marine Cargo Insurance certificates instantly, verify premium payments in real time and speed up cargo clearance through automated processing.

KIFWA said the system will also improve transparency and service delivery across the logistics sector by reducing manual processes and supporting faster compliance with the new insurance requirements.

Ahead of the rollout, KIFWA and its partners have conducted sensitisation and training sessions for industry players in Nairobi, Mombasa, Malaba, Busia, Namanga and Isebania.

The association said the training will continue over the next 12 months to help members understand how to access the platform, issue certificates, make premium payments, integrate with customs clearance processes and report claims.

KIFWA further reaffirmed its commitment to supporting clearing and forwarding agents during the transition through technical assistance, continuous training and collaboration with participating insurers.

The association has urged all members to adopt the Digital Marine Cargo Insurance platform to avoid disruptions in cargo clearance once the mandatory requirements come into effect.
