There were tears in Kiambu County and a deep sense of national unease early Monday morning as Juja Member of Parliament, George Koimburi, was found abandoned in Kibichoi—bruised, traumatised, and unable to utter a single word.

Hours earlier on Sunday, faithful gathered at Full Gospel Church in Mugutha watched in horror as armed men stormed the sanctuary, interrupted the Sunday sermon, and dragged the MP into a waiting silver Subaru Forester. It was an abduction in broad daylight, witnessed by families, children, and the elderly—people who had come to seek peace and prayer, only to witness violence and fear.

When he was discovered, Koimburi’s clothes were torn, his face swollen, and his eyes blank with pain. Witnesses said he bore clear signs of torture, and his lips trembled as he tried, and failed, to speak. His silence screamed louder than words ever could.

His wife, speaking through tears, recalled a similar incident not long ago when the MP vanished during an investigation. “They took everything—his phone, his car—and we were left in the dark. Now they have done it again, only worse. My children did not sleep. They kept asking, ‘Where is Daddy?’ How do I answer that when even the law offers no protection?”

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has denied involvement in the abduction but admitted Koimburi was under investigation for alleged land fraud and mismanagement of constituency funds. But to many Kenyans, this was more than a legal matter—it was a heart-wrenching display of impunity.

The abduction came just two days after Koimburi reportedly escaped a similar attempt, fleeing on a motorcycle. Now, after barely surviving this second ordeal, questions abound—who is behind this? And why?

Political leaders, particularly from the opposition Democratic Change Party (DCP), have cried foul, accusing state organs of orchestrating targeted attacks. “It started with me, then Linturi, then Muturi, and now Koimburi,” said DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua. “This is no longer politics. This is persecution.”

As the sun rose over Kibichoi, a shivering George Koimburi was wrapped in a borrowed jacket and rushed to hospital. But in the hearts of many Kenyans, especially those from Juja, the damage had already been done. A leader had been taken—violently, publicly—and left broken. The scars, physical and emotional, will not heal easily.

This is no longer just a political story. It is a national cry for justice, safety, and the sanctity of human dignity.
