The Nairobi County Government announced a ban on hawking within the Central Business District (CBD) of Nairobi, effective immediately, on Thursday.

In a special notice, Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration specified that hawking of merchandise will only be permitted on backstreets and lanes from Monday to Saturday, between 4 pm and 10 pm.

Godfrey Akumali, the Acting County Secretary and Head of County Public Service, indicated that the designated backstreets fall within the area from Tom Mboya Street to Kirinyaga Road.

“No hawking will be allowed on the main streets and roads, including Moi Avenue, Haile Selassie Avenue, Kenneth Matiba Road, Latema Road, Ronald Ngala Street, Mfangano Street, Hakati Road, and River Road,” warned Akumali.

He reiterated that all walkways within the Central Business District are strictly for pedestrians and are not designated for trading.

“The general public is asked to take note that anyone contravening this notice will be prosecuted within the Nairobi City County Government by-laws,” he stated.
