Safaricom has today announced a strategic partnership with ONFON Mobile, bringing affordable 4G smartphones to more Kenyans through a third party Pay-As-You-Go (PayGo) platform.

Through this partnership, customers can now acquire the Neon Ultra 2 smartphones on Lipa Mdogo Mdogo terms through ONFON Mobile financing.

In addition to flexible daily payments, the devices come bundled with insurance coverage, offering customers protection against loss and accidental damage – a significant milestone in reducing the financial risk of smartphone ownership

“In today’s world, a smartphone is more than just a device; it is a gateway to opportunity. From mobile banking, online learning, accessing e-health and government services, we want every Kenyan to have a fair shot at participating in the digital economy,” said Fawzia Ali, Chief Consumer Business Officer, Safaricom.

With over 12 million customers still using 2G phones, Safaricom is focused on reducing cost and accessibility barriers that hinder 4G migration, particularly among customers in low-income and rural communities.

“This launch in Eldoret is just the beginning. We see this as a pilot for a broader national rollout, one where every Kenyan can access the tools they need to connect, learn, trade and grow,” added Fawzia Ali.

While Safaricom’s Lipa Mdogo Mdogo proposition has already empowered many customers to upgrade from 2G, the partnership with ONFON extends the reach of device financing through ONFONs USSD-based enrollment platform *797# and its nationwide network of retail agents.

“Our PayGo platform is designed for inclusivity, and by combining it with a trusted brand like Safaricom, we can make a real difference in closing the digital gap,” said Dennis Makori, CEO of ONFON Mobile.

Interested customers can check their eligibility by dialing *797#. The offer is available at Safaricom Shops, Safaricom Dealers and ONFON Mobile partner shops countrywide. ONFON’s nationwide network of retail agents ensures customers in peri-urban and rural areas can easily access and enrol in the device financing program.
