Imagine a remote that is small enough to fit anywhere but unleashes the power and experience that can only be anticipated for the future… Imagine a remote that uses no disposable batteries but harnesses the power of the sun to operate… Revolutionary, right?

We are talking about Samsung’s SolarCell Remote – a device designed to revolutionize the way we interact with our electronic devices while minimizing our carbon footprint, hence pushing the world towards embracing green and making the world a better place.

This remote does not use disposable batteries. Samsung Electronics developed this device to combat the environmental impact of discarding used batteries. It is the industry’s first rechargeable remote control, with a solar panel (solar cell) that can be charged by sunlight or indoor lighting. The remote can also be charged with a USB-C cable so consumers have many ways to charge their remote.

According to Samsung, 24% of the plastics used in the SolarCell Remote come from recycled materials. This means more than 55 tonnes of waste are recycled for the annual production of 10 million SolarCell Remotes. This equates to about an 18% decrease in carbon emissions compared to production using conventional materials.

Components such as the top and bottom covers, and the navigation and volume keys contain 30% recycled plastics. Even the SolarCell bracket uses 20% recycled ocean-bound plastics from discarded fishing nets. This is a one-of-a-kind remote that is 100% tailored towards getting rid of waste plastics around the world, especially ones that affect marine life.

“As the SolarCell Remote became smaller, manufacturing uses less plastic and it became an ideal size for consumers’ hands, making it a better product all around,” JongKeun Lee of H/W Platform Lab explained.

What is more, all of Samsung’s 2023 Lifestyle TVs are equipped with the 2023 SolarCell Remote. This means all customers purchasing these TVs going forward have an opportunity to interact with this world’s first SolarCell Remote. Samsung’s objective is to bring more environmentally friendly products across all its brands. Furthermore, they are seeking to ensure consumers are living a more sustainable lifestyle.

Interestingly, even though the SolarCell remote is clever, clean, and high-tech, Samsung’s ultimate goal is to reduce the use of materials, save energy, and create products that users can control with minimal effort. This could mean one day we get rid of the remote control entirely.

Whether this means Samsung TV remotes could be entirely replaced by mobile phones, voice controls, or some other type of technology is unclear. Either way, SolarCell remotes are slowly moving us closer to the future, maybe we might not have any TV remotes at all.

There is no doubt that Samsung’s SolarCell Remote is a shining example of how technology can be both innovative and environmentally conscious. With all the amazing features that come with this remote, Samsung has created a remote control that aligns with the values of today’s eco-conscious consumers.

As we collectively strive towards a greener future, Samsung’s commitment to sustainability in the Solar Cell Remote gives much-needed hope to the electronics industry. It encourages other manufacturers to follow suit in creating products that not only meet consumer needs but also contribute to a more sustainable and eco-friendly world.
