Showmax has unveiled Black & Blue, its latest original series set to premiere on 6 November 2024. This police-based mockumentary promises to deliver a fresh and comedic twist on law enforcement in Kenya, with a captivating blend of satire, humour, and eye-opening commentary on the country’s policing system.
The story follows a daring and experimental move by the Kenyan Police, as they appoint a civilian as the new Officer Commanding Station (OCS). With no prior experience in law enforcement, this new OCS brings a radically different perspective, flipping conventional policing on its head and causing a stir at the pilot station. What unfolds is a hilarious and unexpected exploration of the challenges, missteps, and absurdities that arise when civilians take charge of the station.
To document this unique process, a camera crew is hired, aiming to capture the police’s attempts to modernise and reform. However, as with most things behind the scenes, what the documentary team uncovers is far from the polished public image the police intended. The cameras reveal the antics, tensions, and outright shenanigans that officers get up to as they struggle to adapt to their new reality.
A Star-Studded Cast Brings the Story to Life
At the heart of Black & Blue is a standout cast led by Kalasha Award-winning actor Gitura Kamau, known for his role in Lusala. Kamau plays the civilian OCS with charm and wit, delivering a performance that is sure to resonate with audiences. Joining him is a stellar ensemble including Lydia Gitachu (Kina), fellow Kalasha winner Annstella Karimi (Baba Twins, Sue na Jonnie), Collins Koyo (Asha), Hillary Wamiti (Sense8), Andrew Ng’ang’a (Escape from Mogadishu), Dennis Mutisya (Varshita, Shanga), Mwajuma Belle (Poacher, The Call), and Lawrence Kimani (Varshita, Njoro wa Uba).
Each actor brings a distinct energy to their role, creating a colourful and dynamic portrayal of the fictional station’s staff. Whether they are bumbling through their day-to-day duties or attempting to navigate the unorthodox changes imposed by their new OCS, the cast’s performances promise to keep viewers entertained throughout the season.
The Vision Behind Black & Blue
The brains behind Black & Blue are Abdi Shuria and King ‘Mushking’ Muriuki, who also directed other Showmax hits like Igiza and Faithless. Reflecting on his inspiration for the series, Shuria shared, “The idea for Black & Blue came to me as I reflected on my numerous interactions with the Kenyan police, which, in the past, have not always been positive. I have always believed that where there is tragedy, there is also humour. For me, humour is cathartic – it’s like a stress relief.”
Shuria explained how he sought to turn his personal negative experiences into something lighter, more digestible, and entertaining. “I asked myself, ‘How can I take these negative experiences and inject humour into them as a tool to explore, discuss, and entertain?’ The mockumentary format allowed us to explore the world of Kenyan policing in a lighthearted and entertaining way, while still shedding light on everyday topics.”
This combination of humour and social commentary is what makes Black & Blue stand out. While it gives audiences a much-needed comedic escape, the series also subtly explores the realities of policing and reform in Kenya – all through the unique lens of satire.
