NBA Africa, in partnership with Stanbic Bank and the Luol Deng Foundation, has marked a significant milestone in South Sudan’s basketball landscape by inaugurating the first Jr. NBA League. The initiative kicked off at the freshly unveiled Stanbic basketball court at St. Mark’s Orthodox School in Juba last December.
With an enthusiastic start on March 7, the Stanbic Jr. NBA League commenced its inaugural season, boasting 30 boys and girls teams aged 16 and under. Scheduled to run until July, the regular season will prepare for the playoffs and finals slated for August.
True to the NBA format, the Stanbic Jr. NBA League is adopting a structure mirroring its renowned counterpart. Each team represents one of the esteemed 30 NBA teams and has been outfitted with corresponding NBA team-branded jerseys. To set the stage, a draft was held where participating school and community teams selected their NBA counterpart for the season. Adding to the enthusiasm, two-time NBA All-Star and South Sudan Basketball Federation President Luol Deng graced the event, further galvanizing the budding talents.
Beyond the thrill of competition, the Jr. NBA is committed to instilling fundamental skills and core values of the game among young players. Operating as the league’s global youth basketball participation program for both boys and girls, it seeks to enhance the grassroots basketball experience for players, coaches, and parents alike. Impressively, Jr. NBA programming has already directly impacted over 170,000 youth across 18 African nations, underscoring its pivotal role in nurturing basketball talent and fostering a culture of sportsmanship.
The launch of the Stanbic Jr. NBA League signifies a landmark moment for basketball enthusiasts in South Sudan. It underscores the collective efforts of NBA Africa, Stanbic Bank, and the Luol Deng Foundation in propelling the sport to new heights on the African continent. With the promise of talent development and a platform for showcasing skills, the league holds the potential to be a transformative force in the region’s sporting landscape.
