The United States Embassy in Tanzania has issued a security alert cautioning travellers and foreign nationals of potential nationwide anti government demonstrations planned for 9 December, noting that “protest activity could begin as early as December 5.” The Embassy issued the warning in response to heightened political tensions following the 29 October elections.
According to the alert, the recent unrest saw “destruction of public infrastructure, violence against civilians, internet shutdowns, and major travel disruptions.” The Embassy warns that travellers to Tanzania over the next several weeks should prepare for possible disruption to movement and essential services.
The advisory states that travellers may face “the possibility of unrest, nationwide curfews, an internet blackout, cancellation of ferries to Zanzibar, cancellation of international flights, and roadblocks enacted to enforce strict movement controls.”
Foreign nationals have also been attracting greater scrutiny from local security agencies. The alert notes that “security forces have searched electronics for evidence of connection to unrest or politically sensitive content,” and that police have reminded the public that sharing pictures or videos that “may cause panic is a criminal offense.” Reports indicate that electronic devices are being checked for politically sensitive material.
The Embassy cautions that its ability to assist travellers could be restricted during periods of instability, stating that “the Embassy’s ability to assist travelers in danger is further limited during a period of unrest.”
Travellers are advised to take precautions outlined in the security notice. These include the need to “avoid demonstrations,” “avoid crowds,” and ensure they have sufficient “water, food, medication, fuel, and cash in case of shelter in place requirements.” They are also urged to follow any announced curfews, be mindful of local laws, confirm flight schedules by telephone before going to the airport, and review their personal safety plans.
