Nairobi is increasingly becoming a key meeting point for technology companies and policymakers shaping Africa’s digital future.

The latest example is the Sub-Saharan Africa Safer Internet Summit hosted in the city by TikTok, bringing together government officials, regulators and industry leaders from across the region.

Now in its third year, the summit began in Ghana in 2024 and continued in Cape Town before arriving in Nairobi this year, reflecting growing regional collaboration on online safety.

Kenya’s ICT Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo said the country is committed to supporting conversations that encourage responsible innovation and digital growth.

The summit addressed topics such as AI governance, protecting young users online and tackling digital misinformation.

Participants also discussed the importance of building partnerships between governments, technology companies and civil society organisations.

For many global tech firms, Kenya’s fast-growing digital economy and strong startup ecosystem make Nairobi an ideal location for regional policy discussions.

As Africa’s internet population continues to expand, the city is positioning itself as a leading hub where the continent’s digital rules and innovations are increasingly being shaped.
