Something extraordinary has occurred in the heart of Nairobi, Kenya, the bustling city hub for innovation and technology in Africa. Last week, Safaricom, the country’s leading telecommunications company, hosted the second annual Engineering Summit, “Decode 2.0.” This two-day event wasn’t just any conference but a dynamic platform that aimed to ignite Africa’s digital renaissance.

The summit’s theme was carefully chosen: “Igniting Africa’s Digital Renaissance.” It reflected the aspirations of Safaricom and the Kenyan tech community to propel the continent into a new era of digital innovation and prosperity. The event attracted over 800 industry stakeholders from diverse fields, each eager to contribute to the digital transformation of Africa. Thousands more joined virtually, reflecting the global interest in Africa’s tech scene.

Decode 2.0 was more than just a conference; it was a celebration of technological excellence and an opportunity to showcase the technical prowess of Safaricom’s engineers and their commitment to shaping the future. Peter Ndegwa, the CEO of Safaricom, passionately articulated this vision in his opening speech.

“Kenya is a youthful country with immense opportunities,” he proclaimed. “By combining the power of tech and purpose, we intend to tap into the ability and skill set of the youth, supporting them to take full advantage of the digital space and gain immensely from it.”

During the summit, Safaricom unveiled a trio of groundbreaking platforms. The Safaricom Entertainment Hub, a one-stop platform for video, music, gaming, education, and more, aimed to streamline the content consumption experience. The Safaricom Developer Portal provided developers with essential resources and tools, making the development process more efficient and user-friendly. The revamped M-PESA Daraja API Gateway promised faster and more secure financial transactions.

One of the most breathtaking moments of the summit was the live demonstration of the Digital Twin. This AI-powered technology created a lifelike digital replica of a human, responding to requests just like a real person. The potential applications for healthcare, customer service, and entertainment were mind-boggling.

The summit’s significance extended beyond technological showcases. It was a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration, fostering the growth of the engineering community. With over 5,000 members across Kenya, the Safaricom Engineering Community has thrived in the past year. Safaricom’s commitment to upscaling and certifying 1,400 members through the ‘Accelerate by Safaricom’ program demonstrated their dedication to nurturing local talent in fields like Fintech, IoT, Artificial Intelligence, and more.

As the summit concluded, Felix Koskei, the Head of Public Service, commended the role of Safaricom and the tech community in Kenya’s development. He remarked, “I am now confident that I can ask Safaricom and all you techies to help Decode the government of Kenya. The government has created a comprehensive digital agenda to transform the country’s economy and society through technology. Overall, we are focused on leveraging technology to achieve sustainable development.”

Decode 2.0 is a catalyst for Africa’s digital renaissance. With innovative platforms, a commitment to youth empowerment, and a focus on national development, Safaricom had set the stage for a brighter, more technologically advanced future in Kenya and across the continent.
