In the heart of Nairobi, at the prestigious Muthaiga Golf Club, the 31st Gertrude’s Charity Golf Tournament unfolded as a beacon of hope for children affected by cancer. Avid golfers, compassionate philanthropists, and dedicated supporters rallied together, channelling their enthusiasm into a cause of immeasurable significance—treating cancer-stricken children.

The event served as a rallying cry, directing its efforts toward the Gertrude’s Hospital Foundation Cancer program, a vital initiative to alleviate the burdens of young souls fighting against this formidable disease. The program, an integral part of the Kenya Childhood Cancer Program, stands as a testament to hope, striving for early diagnosis, comprehensive treatment, and healthcare professional training across ten counties in Kenya.

Since its inception in 2019, this program has woven healing threads, impacting over 40 children in the past year alone. Generous contributions from corporate donors, stemming from last year’s golf tournament and a recent charity walk, have propelled this cause forward, nurturing dreams of a brighter, healthier future for these resilient young warriors.

Dr. Robert Nyarango, the CEO of Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital, resonates deeply with the program’s mission. He shares a poignant truth—how only a fraction of diagnosed children in Kenya can complete their treatment, underscoring the urgency to bridge the funding gap. In developed countries, the stark contrast in survival rates highlights the chasm that needs addressing—a mission to ensure at least 80% of diagnosed children achieve remission.

The strides taken by the Kenya Childhood Cancer Program are evident and promising. Training 200 healthcare professionals across counties like Garissa, Mombasa, Nakuru, and Nyeri marks the beginning. Plans are underway to expand this crucial training initiative to five additional counties, bolstering their early detection and comprehensive care efforts.

Amidst these achievements lies a steadfast commitment from Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital—an unwavering dedication to transform the lives of these courageous children and their families. The call resounds for continued support from individuals and corporations who share the vision of treating over 1,000 children by 2024, with aspirations to extend healing far beyond.

Dr. Carol Waweru, the program manager at Gertrude’s Hospital Foundation, extends an earnest invitation, a plea to join hands in this noble fight. “Let us partner to help children, who are our future, fight cancer. Let us walk this journey together,” she urges, echoing the collective sentiment of hope and determination.

The 31st Gertrude’s Charity Golf Tournament stands as more than a sporting event—it embodies a collective spirit, a testament to humanity’s ability to come together, swing by swing, step by step, to weave a tapestry of hope for the youngest and most vulnerable among us. Together, we forge ahead, driven by a shared purpose—to heal, uplift, and ensure that every child’s tomorrow is filled with promise and possibility.
