The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has launched a new WhatsApp-based tax filing platform, making it significantly easier for Kenyan taxpayers to file their annual returns directly through the popular messaging app.

What Is the KRA WhatsApp Tax Filing Solution?

The KRA WhatsApp Filing Solution is a digital tax service that allows Kenyan taxpayers to file their annual income tax returns via WhatsApp. Designed to improve compliance and user experience, the platform cuts the number of filing steps from eight down to three — a dramatic simplification of a process many taxpayers have historically found cumbersome.

The platform also offers real-time assistance, meaning users who encounter difficulties during the filing process can receive instant support without needing to visit a KRA office or navigate the iTax portal.

“The introduction of the WhatsApp Filing Solution leverages the widely used messaging platform to support taxpayers in filing their annual returns and provides real-time assistance,” said KRA Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga.

Key Features of the KRA WhatsApp Tax Filing Platform

1. Simplified Three-Step Filing Process

Gone are the days of an eight-step filing procedure. The new system streamlines the process into just three steps, reducing errors and saving taxpayers valuable time.

2. Real-Time Taxpayer Support

The platform provides instant assistance to users experiencing challenges during filing, helping ease congestion on traditional KRA channels and encouraging timely returns submissions before the June 30 deadline.

3. Pre-Filled Tax Returns for Employed Individuals

Salaried Kenyans will benefit from returns pre-populated with employer PAYE data, including:

  • Gross pay
  • Taxable income
  • Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) deductions
  • Affordable Housing Levy (AHL) deductions

This significantly reduces manual data entry and the risk of errors for individuals with employment income.

4. Simplified PAYE Returns for Employers

Employers will also find relief through a revamped PAYE return system built for greater accuracy in capturing exemptions and tax reliefs.

5. Pre-Filled Returns for Taxpayers with Multiple Income Streams

For taxpayers earning income beyond employment — such as rental income or business income — the system offers pre-filled annual returns covering basic personal details and withholding tax information.

6. Upgraded Taxpayer Dashboard

KRA has rolled out an enhanced taxpayer dashboard featuring improved visibility across transactions, including:

  • Invoices
  • Import and export records
  • Allowable business expense claims with greater flexibility

Why This Matters for Kenyan Taxpayers

This rollout is part of KRA’s broader digital transformation agenda, aimed at reducing barriers to tax compliance and modernizing Kenya’s revenue administration. With WhatsApp boasting millions of active users in Kenya, using the platform as a tax filing channel is a strategic move to meet taxpayers where they already are.

The integration of pre-filled data drawn directly from employer records also represents a shift toward a more assisted filing model — reducing the burden on individual taxpayers and improving the accuracy of submissions across the board.

How to Access the KRA WhatsApp Tax Filing Service

Taxpayers can access the service directly via WhatsApp using KRA’s official business number. Once connected, the chatbot guides users through the three-step filing process in real time.
