In recent days, a troubling trend has emerged in Kenya’s public discourse: the deliberate spread of unverified and potentially malicious claims targeting public officials. 

Among those affected is George Obell, Commissioner for the Micro and Small Taxpayers Department at the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). The allegations circulating online—suggesting corruption or investigations, lack credible substantiation and reflect a broader culture of reputational attacks that undermine both institutions and individuals.

Smear campaigns often intensify when leadership transitions loom. With discussions around succession at KRA, it is not far-fetched that vested interests may attempt to discredit strong candidates through proxy channels such as bloggers or anonymous online platforms. Such tactics are not only unethical but corrosive to governance, as they shift focus from merit to manufactured controversy.

Kenya must resist normalizing character assassination as a tool of competition. Institutions like KRA depend on public trust, and that trust is eroded when misinformation is allowed to flourish unchecked. Criticism, where warranted, should be evidence-based and channeled through appropriate oversight mechanisms, not rumor mills.

Defending individuals like Mr. Obell is not about shielding leaders from scrutiny; it is about upholding fairness, due process, and integrity in public discourse. In the absence of verified evidence, the presumption must remain that he has served, and continues to serve, with professionalism. Anything less risks turning public service into a battlefield of propaganda rather than a platform for national progress.
