Lean Energy Solutions has set a new benchmark in championing Kenya’s clean energy future with the inaugural University Essay Award Ceremony on Renewable Energy, a landmark event at the Kenya School of Government that convened government leaders, academia, students, and energy stakeholders to celebrate the bold ideas of young Kenyans shaping a sustainable tomorrow.

Launched on 30 June 2025, the nationwide competition drew 846 submissions from universities across Kenya, inviting students to present practical, high-impact ideas for accelerating the country’s clean-energy transition. The overwhelming response reflected Generation Z’s determination to play an active role in steering Kenya’s energy future. The programme culminated on 5 September 2025 at the Kenya School of Government, where the top three essays were honoured: Alex Otieno (University of Nairobi) as overall winner (KES 70,000), Esther Awak (Mt. Kenya University) as first runner-up (KES 50,000), and Benedict Kioko (Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology) as second runner-up (KES 30,000).

Speaking at the ceremony, Kennedy Oduoyo, Head of Programs and Youth and Technical Advisor to the Cabinet Secretary at the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, underscored the need for sustained mentorship and the integration of youth perspectives into national policy. “This competition demonstrates that when given the right platform, our young people step forward with bold solutions capable of shaping policy and practice. The Ministry remains committed to mentoring and supporting them as partners in advancing Kenya’s energy transition,” he said.

For Lean Energy Solutions, the event was a significant step in advancing its mission of embedding sustainability into business and community practices. Dinesh Tembhekar, Founder and Managing Director of Lean Energy Solutions, commended the enthusiasm of participants and the depth of their ideas. “The brilliance and energy demonstrated by the 846 participants affirms that our next generation of innovators is ready to step forward. At Lean Energy, we believe the transition to sustainability must be youth-driven, and we are proud to champion platforms that bring their ideas to life. This competition is not an end but the start of an annual tradition that will ensure young people remain at the heart of Kenya’s renewable energy transformation,” he said.

By celebrating these innovators, the Lean Energy Essay Award Competition recognized individual excellence while affirming the power of youth-driven ideas in shaping Kenya’s clean energy future. The event reinforced Lean Energy’s commitment to bridging academia, government, and industry in pursuit of practical solutions that will accelerate the country’s transition to renewable energy and inspire a generation to lead the way.
