Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has formally declared his intention to contest the presidency in the 2027 General Election, vowing to offer leadership free from personal vendettas or political grudges.
Speaking during an interview with K24 on Monday, Dr. Matiang’i said his decision to vie for the top seat is driven purely by a desire to serve and restore Kenya’s socio-economic standing.
“If this country wants seriousness and delivery of services, I am one of the candidates they should look at very carefully,” he said.
“I have no scores to settle with anyone… I have no political debts… I am here for only one purpose – making the contribution to fix the challenges that face my country and to go forward.”
The former CS stressed that Kenya has the potential to reclaim its place as a leading economy, citing its natural resources and youthful, educated population as key assets.
“Countries go through situations like we are going through right now. The worst thing that can happen is to lose hope in our country. Kenya has a great capacity and we will rise again,” he noted.
Matiang’i dismissed speculation about infighting within the opposition regarding a flagbearer, revealing that he will soon disclose the political party he will use for his presidential bid.
He has reportedly aligned himself with several seasoned political figures, including Martha Karua (People’s Liberation Party), Eugene Wamalwa (DAP-K), former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua (Democracy for Citizens Party), Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and former Public Service CS Justin Muturi.
The coalition has pledged to craft a well-thought-out strategy to unseat President William Ruto in the 2027 polls.
Matiang’i’s entry into the race adds to the growing list of high-profile contenders vying for the presidency, setting the stage for a heated political showdown.
