In a bold step towards supporting children with disabilities in Kenya, Sanlam Kenya PLC and the Sanlam Foundation, in collaboration with the Gertrude’s Hospital Foundation (GHF), have announced a partnership valued at over Kshs 5.6 million. This joint initiative, backed by the Allianz Group Social Impact Fund, is dedicated to alleviating the challenges faced by physically challenged children in the country.

The partnership is designed to benefit more than 300 children, providing them with critical tools to enhance their social and communication skills, while fostering social inclusion. By developing these skills, the project aims to improve the children’s functional abilities and prepare them for future success in the job market. The Allianz Group Social Impact Fund, which is a key pillar of the group’s Corporate Citizenship Strategy, seeks to empower next generations and persons with disabilities to navigate and overcome systemic social risks.

A Bright Future for Children with Disabilities

The partnership was officially launched under the banner “Enabling Children with Disabilities for a Brighter Tomorrow.” Dr. Nyamemba Patrick Tumbo, Sanlam Kenya PLC’s Group CEO, emphasized the transformative impact of the initiative, particularly in addressing the unique needs of children with disabilities.

Dr Tumbo stated, “At Sanlam, we are proud to partner with the Gertrude Hospital Foundation in this noble initiative to foster a sense of belonging and promote independence among participants. Ultimately, the programme aims to foster social inclusion and acceptance, positioning children with disabilities to participate in educational and vocational opportunities, thus enhancing their employability prospects.”

The initiative’s first phase will support more than 50 children, introducing tailored occupational therapy interventions, sports, and art activities. These activities are not only designed to improve their functional abilities but also to boost their independence and overall quality of life.

A Commitment to Social Impact

Ms. Nozizwe Vundla, Head of the Sanlam Foundation, reiterated the Foundation’s commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen. She highlighted that Sanlam’s presence in Kenya is not merely about business but also about creating lasting social value.

“In Kenya, we want to be at the forefront of transformation in the financial sector and support communities to live with confidence through empowerment initiatives like the Gertrude Hospital Foundation/Sanlam Enabling Children with Disabilities for a Brighter Tomorrow project,” Ms Vundla explained.

She also pointed out that this project is a testament to Sanlam’s resolve to drive positive social impact, helping the Group maintain its reputation as a trusted and relevant organisation across the African continent.

Addressing Barriers for Persons with Disabilities

Dr. Robert Nyarango, CEO of Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital, also underscored the importance of the partnership in addressing the longstanding barriers faced by children with disabilities in Kenya. He noted that despite the existence of incentives to promote inclusivity, many persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Kenya still struggle to access formal employment.

“The Gertrude’s Hospital Foundation’s mission is to improve access to quality healthcare services for disadvantaged children in Kenya and Eastern Africa through the integration of care, research, education, and technology,” Dr Nyarango said. “We believe that expanding access to quality healthcare can significantly enhance the developmental prospects of every child.”

The Gertrude’s Hospital Foundation will focus on delivering diagnostic, treatment, and care services to children in hard-to-reach areas, ensuring no child is left behind.
