A dramatic escalation in the long-simmering conflict between Iran and Israel erupted late Friday and continued into Saturday, with both nations launching direct military attacks on each other’s territories. The unprecedented exchange, which included Israeli airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and a barrage of Iranian ballistic missiles aimed at Israeli cities, has plunged the Middle East into a new and perilous phase of instability, punctuated by defiant statements from all sides.

The hostilities began in the early hours of Friday, June 13, 2025, when Israel launched a significant air assault, dubbed “Operation Rising Lion,” against multiple targets within Iran. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the nation, stating the operation was a preemptive measure targeting “the heart of Iran’s ballistic missiles program.” He asserted the strikes would continue “for as long as it takes to remove this threat.”

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir emphasized the perceived urgency of the operation, saying, “We had reached the point of no return. Freedom is granted to those willing to fight for it.” Military spokesman Brigadier General Effie Defrin added that over 200 targets had been struck, and that the IDF was “continuing with full force, at a high pace, in order to meet the goals we have set for ourselves.”

In a swift and forceful retaliation, Iran unleashed waves of ballistic missiles and drones towards Israel throughout Friday night and into Saturday morning. Air raid sirens blared across Israel, from the northern border to the southern deserts, sending millions of citizens scrambling for shelter.

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian condemned the Israeli assault as a “foolish act,” warning that “The Islamic Republic of Iran’s legitimate and powerful response will make the enemy regret its foolish actions.” At an emergency UN Security Council meeting, Iran’s UN Envoy Amir Saeid Iravani labeled the Israeli attack a “declaration of war” and vowed a “decisive and proportionate” response. Following the killing of senior military commanders in the Israeli strikes, the newly appointed head of the army, Major General Mohammad Pakpour, issued a chilling threat, declaring, “The gates of hell will open to the child-killing regime.”

Israeli military officials reported that their multi-layered air defense systems intercepted a large number of the incoming projectiles. However, some missiles penetrated the defenses, causing damage and casualties. In Tel Aviv, a residential building was struck, resulting in injuries, and fatalities were reported in other parts of the country. Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a stern warning: “The ayatollahs’ regime has crossed red lines… and it will pay a heavy price for this.”

The international community has reacted with alarm. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the escalation and expressed particular concern “by Israeli attacks on nuclear installations in Iran while talks between Iran and the United States on the status of Iran’s nuclear programme are underway.” He urged both sides to “show maximum restraint, avoiding at all costs a descent into deeper conflict.”

The United States was quick to distance itself from the Israeli strikes. “We are not involved in strikes against Iran and our top priority is protecting American forces in the region,” stated Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who also cautioned, “Let me be clear: Iran should not target U.S. interests or personnel.” President Donald Trump, while noting the US was not involved, issued a stark message to Tehran: “Iran must make a deal, before there is nothing left… No more death, no more destruction, JUST DO IT, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.”

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, declared that in light of the attacks, dialogue with the US over its nuclear program is now “meaningless,” accusing Washington of supporting the Israeli operation.

As of Saturday morning, the situation remains highly volatile. The direct nature of these attacks marks a significant departure from the shadow war that has long characterized the Iran-Israel conflict. The world now watches anxiously, with diplomatic efforts underway to quell a crisis that threatens to erupt into a full-blown regional war.
