A tragic incident unfolded on Thursday at the Makadara Law Courts in Nairobi, leading to the fatal shooting of a senior police officer after he wounded Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti. The shocking event transpired shortly after Magistrate Kivuti delivered a ruling in a case involving the officer’s wife.

The Incident

According to a police report, Chief Inspector Samson Kipchirchir Kipruto, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) in Londiani, had travelled from Kisumu to Nairobi for the hearing of his wife’s case. His wife, Jenniffer Wairimu, was accused of fraud, specifically obtaining Ksh. 2.9 million by false pretence. She had requested to be released on bail pending the hearing and determination of her case.

The court, convening in a tent outside the main court precincts due to ongoing renovations, denied her request. Magistrate Kivuti ruled to cancel Wairimu’s bond due to her repeated absences from court, which she had attributed to suffering from cancer. The magistrate, however, dismissed this excuse and ordered her remand until June 27.

The Shooting

Following the ruling, Kipruto moved behind the tent and shot Magistrate Kivuti, injuring her in the chest and left hip. According to Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei, “Other officers who were present responded and shot the officer, fatally wounding him.”

The incident, recorded under OB No. 45/13/6/2024 at 14:50 hrs by the OC Law Courts, also resulted in injuries to three other officers:

  • PC Augustine Michael Kithumbi: Sustained an injury to the left eye.
  • PC (W) Maureen Lepes: Suffered a gunshot wound to the left leg.
  • PC Eunice Macharia: Injured her left hand.

All the injured officers were immediately rushed to the hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.

Aftermath and Investigation

The swift response by the officers at the scene prevented further escalation of the violence. A Jericho pistol was recovered at the scene and processed by the Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) team from Buruburu. The body of Chief Inspector Kipruto was moved to City Mortuary awaiting autopsy.

Impact and Ongoing Investigation

This tragic event has sent shockwaves through the judicial and law enforcement communities. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with authorities working diligently to understand the full circumstances surrounding this act of violence.

This incident highlights the intense emotional turmoil that can accompany legal proceedings, particularly those involving personal and family matters. The legal system and law enforcement agencies are now left to grapple with the aftermath of this devastating event, striving to ensure justice and maintain public trust.
