China Square is set to open its latest branch at Two Rivers Mall in Nairobi on January 10th, 2025. To celebrate the launch, the retail chain will offer a 20% discount on all in-store items and selected appliances from January 10th to January 12th. This promotional event is expected to attract a large number of shoppers eager to take advantage of the exclusive deals.

The new branch marks a significant step in China Square’s expansion strategy. Two Rivers Mall, one of the largest and most frequented shopping centres in East Africa, provides an ideal location to cater to a diverse clientele. Shoppers visiting during the opening days are advised to prepare for large crowds.

China Square has made a notable impact on Kenya’s retail landscape since its entry into the market. The brand first launched its flagship store at Unicity Mall near Kenyatta University. Known for its affordability and variety, the chain offers a wide range of products, including kitchenware, home decor, furniture, electronics, and clothing. Its success has led to further expansion, with branches now operating in Karen and Langata, Nairobi, Nyali in Mombasa, and Mega City Mall in Kisumu, which opened in December 2024.

The opening at Two Rivers Mall extends China Square’s reach to a broader customer base in Nairobi and its surroundings. The retailer’s pricing strategy, which undercuts many traditional competitors, has earned it a loyal following among cost-conscious shoppers. By sourcing products directly from China, the store provides competitively priced household essentials, electronics, clothing, furniture, and more, all under one roof.

China Square’s rapid growth has not been without challenges. In early 2023, the retailer faced backlash from local traders and government officials, who raised concerns about its pricing strategies and the resulting competition for local businesses. This led to a temporary closure, but the store reopened in March 2023 after negotiations between the Kenyan government and the Chinese business community. The controversy brought increased attention to the retailer and strengthened its position in the market.

Shoppers at the new Two Rivers branch can expect the same extensive product range that has made China Square popular. Categories include household essentials such as kitchenware and cleaning supplies, electronics like gadgets and appliances, affordable clothing and accessories for all ages, and a selection of home and office furniture. Toys, decor, and other miscellaneous items will also be available.

The opening of the new branch underscores broader shifts in Kenya’s retail sector. Foreign retail chains are increasingly prominent, introducing competitive pricing and diverse product offerings. However, this trend has also sparked debates about its impact on local businesses. The partnership with Two Rivers Mall, which features a mix of high-end and mid-range stores, is likely to increase foot traffic while offering shoppers more affordable options.

To make the most of the three-day discount period, shoppers are encouraged to visit early to avoid the anticipated heavy traffic at the mall. The event promises an extensive selection of quality products at discounted prices, further solidifying China Square’s reputation as a one-stop shopping destination.
