Golf continues to play an important role within the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), providing a platform for service personnel, veterans and partners to maintain physical fitness, sharpen concentration and build lasting professional relationships. Beyond the fairways, the sport promotes discipline, patience, resilience and composure, qualities that are equally vital in military service.
These values came to the fore during the Commander Kenya Navy Golf Trophy 2026, hosted by the Commander Kenya Navy, Major General Paul Otieno, at Vipingo Ridge Golf Course in Kilifi County. The tournament brought together serving and retired military personnel, civilian golfers and partners, turning the fairway into a vibrant meeting point for camaraderie, networking and esprit de corps.
During the event, Major Abel Cheboi emerged the overall winner of the KDF Golf Association (KDFGA) category after posting an impressive 40 points off Handicap 21.
In Division A, Brian Simbi, playing off Handicap 5, topped the standings with 37 points. Major Elvis Murunga, Handicap 8, finished runner-up with 36 points while Major Brian Tororei, also playing off Handicap 8, claimed the second runner-up position with 35 points.
Division B produced another closely fought contest, with Warrant Officer 2 Patrick Odhiambo, Handicap 21, taking the top spot with 38 points. Major Chirchir, Handicap 22, followed with 36 points while Major General Stelu Lekolool, Handicap 23, finished second runner-up on 34 points.
The ladies’ category was equally competitive. Constable 2 Doris Wangari, playing off Handicap 32, emerged winner with 39 points. Senior Sapper Christine Kamais, Handicap 12, was runner-up with 31 points, while Major (Dr) Mercy Kinyanjui, Handicap 21, secured the second runner-up position with 36 points.
Speaking before the prize-giving ceremony, Major General Otieno drew parallels between the golf course and naval service, observing that both require discipline, concentration and composure, particularly when faced with pressure. He encouraged participants to remain resilient in the face of setbacks, noting that a difficult moment should not define the outcome of an entire mission. He humorously added that while sailors are accustomed to navigating challenging seas, the golf course presents its own unique difficulties.
He further commended the KDFGA, partners, organisers, officials, marshals, club management, grounds staff and caddies for their contribution towards the successful tournament.
The Commander Kenya Navy Golf Trophy demonstrated that the fairway can serve as a meeting point for more than sporting competition. It remains a platform for fitness, friendship, networking and esprit de corps, reinforcing the bonds that connect the KDF, its veterans, partners and the wider community.
